Preparation for Post-grad Study in Dentistry
Three Year Baccalaureate Degree for Students Wishing to
Attend the Marquette University Dental School
Did you know that…
A Program exists between the Department of Biological Sciences,
the College of Arts and Sciences, and the Marquette Dental School, in
which our students may enter the Dental School after three years of undergraduate
study and, at the end of their first of Dental studies, obtain their Baccalaureate
degree? Awarding of the B.S. degree is made possible through the transfer
of selected Dental School courses back to the College of Arts and Science
which are then applied toward completion of the Major requirements for
the Department of Biological Sciences.
Completion of this Program requires diligence, close attention to course
scheduling (your Department Advisor will help here), and perhaps a summer
session or two. Here are the requirements:
- You must declare a Biological Sciences Major in the Department Office
and at that time indicate you intention to earn your Degree through
this Program.
- All Arts and Sciences “Core” requirements must be completed.
This may be accomplished through completion of coursework at Marquette,
although some courses taken at another College of University may be
used if approved by Marquette. CLEP, AP, or other advanced College credits
may reduce summer coursework.
- You must complete Biology 001 and 002 (Introductory Biology), 090
( Introduction to Biological Investigation; an introductory laboratory
course), 100 (Molecular Biology), 125 (Genetics), 135 (Cell Biology)
and one (1) upper division laboratory course. The remaining credits
for the Major will be taken from the first year Dental School curriculum.
- You must complete all Biology cognate requirements; that is Chemistry
001 and 002 (Introductory Chemistry), Chemistry 023 and024 (Organic
Chemistry), Physics 001 and 002 (Introductory Physics), Math 073 or
080 (Calculus) and one additional Math or Computer Science course.
- To obtain your baccalaureate degree you will have to accumulate a
minimum of 128 credits which will include your major required courses,
major cognate courses, Arts and Science “Core” courses,
the Dental School courses which will be transferred back, and some number
of A & S elective courses which will be needed to complete the 128
credit requirement.
