Graduate Studies
Marquette University, a private educational institution established in 1881 in Milwaukee, offers graduate training in theoretical and experimental aspects of modern biology (biological sciences track), and a neurobiology track. The research interests of the biological sciences track include cell and developmental biology, ecology, genetics and molecular biology, microbiology, plant biology, and physiology.

In addition to research, coursework and teaching, students also participate in a variety of other activities, such as laboratory group meetings and weekly journal clubs, where recent scientific papers are critically reviewed by faculty and students. Students also enjoy the benefits of a distinguished lecture series that brings outstanding scientists to our campus. A special feature of this lecture series is the Oliver H. Smith Memorial Microbiology Lecture.
We strive to train first-rate scientists capable of directing independent research. Our students are prepared for postdoctoral research and ultimately tenure-track faculty positions at prestigious institutions, faculty appointments at institutions where teaching is the main emphasis, and positions in industry or government.
A particular strength of our graduate program is the low student-faculty ratio. This promotes a close relationship between professors and students and permits flexible programming designed to meet the needs of individual students.
