Neuroscience Research Environment

Faculty members of the Neuroscience graduate specialty are affiliated with either the Department of Biological Sciences or the Department of Biomedical Sciences.  Each faculty member has a research laboratory in their home department:  Biological Sciences is in the Wehr Life Sciences Building and Biomedical Sciences is in the Schroeder Health Complex.  The faculty members have international reputations for excellence and are extramurally funded mainly from the National Institutes of Health.  In addition to the equipments in individual labs, large equipment including autoclaves, 4 °C and 37 °C rooms, ultracentrifuges, FPLC, bioimaging systems including a confocal microscope, gel documentation systems, phosphoimager, film processors, and scintillation counters  are available on a shared basis.  A qualified machinist and an electronics technician provide excellent custom design and fabrication support.

Computer and Information Resources

The departments maintain common computer facilities with personal computers, printers, and scanners. Every laboratory is hard wired to the Internet and University resources. Marquette University Raynor Memorial Libraries hold approximately 1200 print journal subscriptions in the biological and health sciences, including many of the most highly cited journals.  Most journals are available on line.  There are comprehensive collections of books in the biological sciences as well as in the health sciences.  The library collection is electronically cataloged and availability status of books is accessible via the Web.  Marquette participates in an interlibrary loan consortium, which provides rapid turnaround for requested materials.  For more details about the libraries’ resources and services for graduate students please see the collection description for biological and biomedical sciences:

Research Partners
The members of the two departments enjoy collaborative interactions with public and private institutions in the greater Milwaukee area and across the country.  Marquette faculty and graduate students have collaborated in research with investigators at Sinai/Samaritan Medical Center, the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Medical College of Wisconsin, the University of Chicago, the University of Michigan, Tulane University, University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, Rockefeller University, University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston, Duke University, Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories, and Jackson Laboratory.  One research group conducts an ongoing project at Yellowstone National Park in conjunction with investigators from the Water Institute of the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.
