Introduction
Undergraduate Education
The Biological Sciences Department is guided by the principle that science should be taught as science is practiced. Consequently, the department emphasizes laboratory training and research for its students. Undergraduates may major in one of three disciplines: Biological Sciences, Biochemistry or Physiological Sciences. The faculty of the department have worked steadily to keep abreast of the advances in the state of the discipline and in instructional techniques, to ensure the highest possible scholarly activities. The core curriculum for each of our majors consists of lecture courses in general biology, biochemistry, cell biology, physiology and genetics, and a stand-alone laboratory program. The low faculty-to-student ratio allows close interaction, and effective mentoring. Experienced, senior faculty bring a dynamism to our introductory lecture and laboratory courses. The latter component consists of 3 required laboratory courses. Students with a strong interest in research are encouraged to enroll in an independent research course with a selected faculty member. The department also provides an undergraduate summer research program for students selected from Marquette as well as universities and colleges from throughout the US.
