Wild Type cc124:
To reveal the waveform, the movement of wild type cells was recorded at 500 Hz and played back at a rate 100 x slower. The beat frequency was 50-60 Hz. Note, the power stroke and recovery stroke were tightly coupled.

RSP16 (HSP40)- mutant:
The movement of RSP16- flagella that beat at ~ 2 Hz, was recorded at 10 Hz and played back 2 x slower. The beating of the flagella lacking the spoke HSP40 stalled irregularly. The stalling preceding power strokes led to prolonged recovery strokes and frequent crosses of two flagella.
